Creating <em>Annetarsia Knits<\/em> was one of the most rewarding and challenging projects of my life. Here are some of the things I learned about writing along the way.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>It is easier to edit than write, so get something written and make it better, later.<\/li>\n<li>The first draft of everything is shit.\u00a0<b>\u2013\u00a0<\/b><strong>Ernest Hemingway<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>If you have any young friends who aspire to become writers, the second greatest favor you can do them is to present them with copies of\u00a0<i>The Elements of Style<\/i>.\u00a0The first greatest, of course, is to shoot them now, while they\u2019re happy. <b>\u2013 Dorothy Parker<\/b><\/li>\n<li>I would advise anyone who aspires to a writing career that before developing his talent he would be wise to develop a thick hide. <b>\u2014 Harper Lee<\/b><\/li>\n<li>You can\u2019t wait for inspiration. You have to go after it with a club. <b>\u2015 Jack London<\/b><\/li>\n<li>Writing a book is a horrible, exhausting struggle, like a long bout with some painful illness. One would never undertake such a thing if one were not driven on by some demon whom one can neither resist nor understand. <b>\u2014 George Orwell<\/b><\/li>\n<li>There are three rules for writing a novel (substitute \u201cknitting pattern\u201d). Unfortunately, no one knows what they are. <b>\u2015 W. Somerset Maugham<\/b><\/li>\n<li>Remember: when people tell you something\u2019s wrong or doesn\u2019t work for them, they are almost always right. When they tell you exactly what they think is wrong and how to fix it, they are almost always wrong. <b>\u2013 Neil Gaiman<\/b><\/li>\n<li>Get through a draft as quickly as possible\u2026Have the courage to write badly. <b>\u2013 Joshua Wolf Shenk<\/b><\/li>\n<li>Substitute \u2018damn\u2019 every time you\u2019re inclined to write \u2018very;\u2019 your editor will delete it and the writing will be just as it should be. <b>\u2013 Mark Twain<\/b><\/li>\n<li>Start telling the stories that only you can tell, because there\u2019ll always be better writers than you and there\u2019ll always be smarter writers than you. There will always be people who are much better at doing this or doing that \u2014 but you are the only you. <b>\u2015 Neil Gaiman<\/b><\/li>\n<li>Consistency is the last refuge of the unimaginative. <b>\u2013 Oscar Wilde<\/b><\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t just plan to write\u2014write. It is only by writing, not dreaming about it, that we develop our own style. \u2013 PD James<\/li>\n<li>Hone your outline\u00a0and then cling to it as a lifeline. \u2013 <b>Bill Wasik<\/b><\/li>\n<li>The way to write a book is to actually write a book. A pen is useful, typing is\u00a0also good.
