{"id":1988,"date":"2014-10-27T16:41:20","date_gmt":"2014-10-27T16:41:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/annetarsia.com\/?p=1988"},"modified":"2014-10-27T00:55:51","modified_gmt":"2014-10-27T00:55:51","slug":"making-progress","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bartonriveryarn.com\/annetarsia\/2014\/10\/making-progress\/","title":{"rendered":"Making progress&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today I walked for an hour on the treadmill, and I couldn&#8217;t have made it without Lucy Neatby.\u00a0 Boy, walking on the treadmill is boring.\u00a0 But I finished &#8220;My First Sock&#8221;, which made the time pass quite easily.\u00a0 Lucy covered picking up stitches, and how to tighten the picked up row.\u00a0 She also had a neat trick for dividing the top and bottom of the foot, for toe shaping.\u00a0 Lucy spends some time preparing, which saves time when actually doing something.\u00a0 I completely agree with this philosophy, so of course I think all of these tips are brilliant :).\u00a0 For toe finishing, she teaches her classic Sock Chimney technique.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t use this, myself, because I just do kitchener off the needle.\u00a0 However, for really learning to graft and read your stitches, the Sock Chimney technique absolutely cannot be beat.\u00a0 It was good for me to have a refresher.<\/p>\n<p>In finishing, Lucy covers how to deal with the gaps and holes that are always going to occur with sock knitting.\u00a0 I agree with her that knitters worry too much about these things, and that it is preferable to fix them in finishing, than to torture your stitches while creating the fabric.\u00a0 And, I was really happy to see that her technique for darning in the ends is basically what I do to bury them.\u00a0 It isn&#8217;t as easy without the links we get with intarsia.\u00a0 However, it still works with ribbing on the inside of a cuff, very well.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.craftsy.com\/ext\/AnneBerk_4680_CP\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1974\" src=\"https:\/\/bartonriveryarn.com\/annetarsia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/lucy-class.jpg\" alt=\"lucy class\" width=\"180\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As a knitting teacher, watching Lucy teach is intimidating.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll bet this is what actresses feel like when they watch Meryl Streep.\u00a0 She was a great teacher when I took classes from her 20 years ago, and she has only improved with time.\u00a0 There is a lot of great material in this class, and every knitter and\/or knitting teacher will find a wealth of information here.\u00a0 I&#8217;m glad I took the time to check it out.<\/p>\n<p>On the knitting front, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ravelry.com\/patterns\/library\/rock-island\">&#8220;Rock Island Shawl&#8221;<\/a> has progressed from the &#8220;cat barf&#8221; stage to the &#8220;soft like a bunny&#8221; stage, after picking up the stitches from the edging and proceeding to the body.\u00a0 Although the chart for the body looks complicated, it is actually much easier for me to knit than the edging was.\u00a0 I&#8217;m having a very good time, now.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1992\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1992\" style=\"width: 242px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bartonriveryarn.com\/annetarsia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/IMG_2162.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1992\" src=\"https:\/\/bartonriveryarn.com\/annetarsia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/IMG_2162-242x300.jpg\" alt=\"Rock Island shawl, about halfway through the lace chart for the body.
