Are you ready to talk about knitted samplers? That’s the subject of Stories In Stitches™ 2, as well as the topic of the month for my blog. There’s only so much you can fit into a book and there are always interesting bits that get left out because of time or page count or money or a slight mis-match of topic. For example, one of the things I’ll be writing about this month is an antique crochet sampler book that has found its way into my possession.
Today I’d like to take you behind the scenes on one of our photo shoots. When Ava was writing her article, “Knitted Samplers over Time,” we knew we wanted to have photographs of a couple of interesting sampler shawls. I happened to have two sitting in my studio: 1) An Orenburg lace shawl I bought from Galina Khmeleva years ago, and 2) a Shetland lace shawl that my friend Anne Berk inherited from her grandmother. I live in a 150 year-old farmhouse, which often makes a great photo studio but I wanted to take these photos outside, so when I set off to go to the Fiber College of Maine in September, I brought the two shawls along.
The Fiber College of Maine event is held at a campground in Searsport, Maine but we (my mom, husband, and I) stayed in a hotel nearby. I wasn’t teaching so I didn’t need to be onsite for the entire time, and we had lots of freedom to explore the area. But we didn’t need to go far to find a place to take photos. The shots below were all taken in the “back yard” of our hotel.
Even among what you have — text, photos, projects — not everything can get into a book. Have a look at these outtakes. You may even like some of them better than the shots we chose to include.
